MEHDA’s small farm resource center opened in 2003.
Four agricultural workers are employed. We graft fruit trees and conduct seed trials. We purchase seeds in bulk and resell them at cost in small quantities. We multiply seeds and cuttings. We help provide fencing and wells. We experiment with new foods, such as Chiya. We collect information on native plants and natural resources, like neem.
We offer swine vaccinations to non-Muslim farmers who raise pigs.
We administer fishery programs, since fishing is essential to our nutrition and economy.
Most Gambian farmers rely on the tools and techniques that have been used for century. We provides a place where new procedures can be tried without economic risk to the communities.
Men grow millet, corn, cassava, and groundnut (peanut). Women walk long distances to fenced community gardens (PCG) that are watered by bucket.
Mango, orange, papaya, banana, and cashew are part of the agricultural economy.
Monkeys and marauding cows are a few of the many troubles growers face.
MEHDA networks with national and international agencies, like ECHO, with the goal providing a learning site.
